Update on World Employment Markets and Hiring Intentions

Wed 20 May 2009

Employment markets and hiring intentions are a good indicator of the strength of the economy.
A quarterly survey by Antal International looks at hiring intentions of 4200 businesses in 32 countries on 5 continents.
The latest report shows overall 46% of organisations currently hiring at managerial/professional level with 44% expecting to hire at that level in the coming quarter. This compares to 54% and 43% las quarter.
Those actually hiring have fallen but not collapsed. Those intending to hire have increased slightly.

The UK figures show 45% hiring and 51% expecting to hire.
This compares to 43% and 34% in the USA.

There are no concrete signs of an upturn at this stage but generally this survey suggests a levelling out.

The survey quotes Churchill.

“This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
